Ecuador Sanctioned for Homophobic Chants During 2026 World Cup Qualifiers

FIFA has sanctioned Ecuador after homophobic chants were heard during their World Cup qualifying match against Peru, which ended 1-0 in favor of Ecuador. The punishment includes a fine of 20,000 Swiss francs and the closure of 15% of the stadium for their next home game.

The incident was brought to light by Peruvian player Renato Tapia, who condemned the discriminatory behavior. Ecuador had previously faced similar disciplinary action during the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
