Lionel Messi to Miss World Cup Qualifiers Against Uruguay and Brazil Due to Injury
Argentina’s national team will have to face their upcoming World Cup Qualifiers without their captain and star player, Lionel Messi. The Rosario-born legend suffered an adductor injury during Inter Miami’s match against Atlanta United in Major League Soccer (MLS), ruling him out of the crucial games against Uruguay and Brazil.
Messi, 37, had been in excellent form, scoring in Inter Miami’s recent 2-1 victory over Atlanta United. However, after the match, he experienced discomfort, and subsequent medical tests confirmed a minor muscle injury.
Head coach Lionel Scaloni will now have to rethink his strategy without Messi, especially considering that other key players, such as Paulo Dybala and Gonzalo Montiel, are also sidelined due to injuries.
Argentina currently leads the South American qualifiers with 25 points from 12 matches. The upcoming fixtures against Uruguay on March 21 in Montevideo and Brazil on March 25 in Buenos Aires will be decisive in securing their spot at the 2026 World Cup.
