Luka Modric doubts the 2026 World Cup: “I don’t know how realistic it is at my age”
Luka Modric, the legendary midfielder for Real Madrid and the Croatian national team, has expressed doubts about participating in the upcoming 2026 World Cup. Despite still being a key figure for both his club and country, the 38-year-old acknowledged that, due to his age, he’s unsure how realistic it is to aim for the next World Cup.
Focused on the Nations League
In a recent press conference, Modric stated that his current focus is on the UEFA Nations League, which begins during this international break. Modric, who has been a fundamental player for Croatia since his debut in 2006, affirmed that he still has the desire to compete internationally but has yet to make a definitive decision about his future in the 2026 World Cup.
“I really enjoy playing for my country, but at my age, I’m not sure how realistic it is to think about the next World Cup. We’ll see how I feel when the time comes,” said the midfielder, who is preparing to turn 39.
A Glorious Cycle with Croatia
Modric has been a cornerstone of the Croatian national team for nearly two decades. He was a crucial part of the team that reached the 2018 World Cup final and helped Croatia secure third place in Qatar 2022. However, after Croatia’s elimination in the group stage of the 2024 European Championship, many speculated that Modric’s glorious run with the national team might be coming to an end.
Although Modric hasn’t completely ruled out participating in the 2026 World Cup, he knows that the decision will depend on how his career and performance evolve over the next few years.
“For now, I don’t want to think about the 2026 World Cup. It’s too soon to decide. I’m focused on what’s ahead,” concluded Modric, leaving open the possibility of retiring before the next World Cup.
For now, the midfielder will focus on contributing to both Real Madrid and Croatia in current competitions, and time will tell if we see Luka Modric in his fifth World Cup.
