World Cup 2026: How Teams Can Qualify in Each Continent
The qualification process for the 2026 World Cup began in October 2023, and while some teams have already made significant strides, many others continue their fight to secure one of the coveted spots. Here’s how the qualifiers are shaping up across each continent:
South America (6 automatic spots + 1 intercontinental playoff)
The 10 South American teams play against each other in a home-and-away format. The top six teams qualify directly, while the seventh will play an intercontinental playoff in March 2026. This qualification phase will conclude in September 2025.
Europe (12 automatic spots + 4 via playoff)
With 54 nations competing (Russia remains suspended), the 12 group winners will qualify directly for the World Cup. The last 4 spots will be decided through UEFA playoffs in March 2026.
Africa (9 automatic spots + 1 intercontinental playoff)
Africa has a qualification format that includes group stages and playoffs. The nine group winners will qualify directly, while the top runners-up will compete for a spot in the intercontinental playoff.
Asia (8 automatic spots + 1 playoff)
Asia has one of the longest and most complex qualification processes, with several group stages culminating in the top eight teams securing their place, while the ninth will compete for an intercontinental playoff spot.
Concacaf (3 automatic spots + 2 intercontinental playoff)
With the United States, Mexico, and Canada as hosts, three more spots are up for grabs. The qualifiers are divided into multiple rounds, and the two best runners-up will join the nations competing for an intercontinental playoff spot.
Oceania (1 automatic spot + 1 playoff)
For the first time, Oceania has one direct spot for the World Cup, with a second place to be decided in an intercontinental playoff. The qualifiers will be divided into several phases, with the top-ranked nations competing in 2025.
Intercontinental Playoff (2 spots)
This playoff will take place in March 2026, featuring six teams from all confederations, except UEFA. Two teams will earn their place in the World Cup after a semifinal and final format.
